While helping to setup for a wedding reception in the spring of 1995, I became mesmerized by the creativity, design and detail of the wedding cake.”
As a licensed Cosmetologist, I had a professional eye for design and creativity. With a desire to try something new, I decided to master cake baking & decorating, by first attending Wilton courses offered at Michael’s craft store and then by immersing myself in reading books, watching videos, attending cake conferences, and finally creating my own cake recipes. Most excitingly, was attending a cake cruise to Alaska to participate in hands-on training under the instruction of some of the leading cake artists in the industry: Nicholas Lodge, Colette Peters and Norman Davis.
As time went on, there became this internal battle between passions… cake design vs. graphic design. Realizing I had a gift for design, I enrolled (UMBC Visual Arts Program) as a full-time, over 40 year-old student who was eager to reside on campus. On December 19, 2013, not only did I receive a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, with a concentration in Graphic Design, I also got kicked out of my campus apartment the same day! Appreciating the similarities between cake design and graphic design, my two passions became one amazing gift, and Ellen Moore Cakery was born.
Ellen Moore Cakery is known for creating custom designs from scratch, using rich, moist, delicious cakes with artistic confections. The cakes and baked goods feature butter cream icing and high quality fondant. Cakes can be adorned with exquisite hand-made sugar flowers, edible ribbons and bows, and/or a variety of custom made accents. Moore combines her passion for baking, cake design and graphic design to construct handmade cakes that are custom and fresh to order. All orders are designed in collaboration her clients.
Ellen Moore Cakery started out as a professional cake design company offering homemade custom cakes and baked goods. Since its inception, Ellen Moore Cakery has grown to be much more than a custom cake design company. “We are not just cakes. We are a dream emporium which exemplifies palate pleasing pleasures, mentorship, inspiration and motivation.”
As a mentor Ellen Moore eventually launched a new extension to her homemade cake design company called, Layers of Fun. Layers of Fun is a creative team building program that serves to enhance relationships between friends, groups and organizations by improving team dynamics, bonding and morale through cake fun-da-mentals.
The program ignites right-brain stimulation, through team building exercises, to promote relationship bonding and increased productivity. Companies in need of business development, marriage ministries, employee morale and school programs benefit from the fun and creative team building program. Layers of Fun is a successful tool in fueling imagination and creativity, while increasing problem solving abilities, bonding, and improving mental health in a fun, team environment.
